Myself and Ladymorgana arrived late to the Grove, but as we descended the slope down to the Grove Heart, we could make out a small circle of several familiar faces lit in the wan candle light.
It was a beautiful Autumn night, the stars were out, there was a very bright Gibbous Moon illuminating our way as beads of reflected moonlight dappled the grass amongst being caught in the evening dew. Turned out we didn’t really need the incense and water I brought, someone else was also well-prepared.
Tatterhood hosted the wonderful ceremony she had prepared for us. This was done in three parts (Thanks to Leithin Cluan for pointing this out to me as I wouldn’t have realised until writing this very blog- and even then it might never have occurred to me…). It began with a guided meditation and then a declaration of offerings to the spirit of the Grove. The last part was for all of us to take a name of another Grove member from ‘the hat’ and keep it secret. The name chosen was then our focus when we wrote a little message on a card (handmade by Tatterhood’s own hands!) for the intended person. Once all cards were put into a bowl, Tatterhood then presented us all with our intended cards, but we were not allowed to see what our messages were until we had got home.
Once all was said and done, and after the packing away of all our things, we enjoyed cake, crisps and wine back in the car park.
It was a good night and a lot was shared, amongst which was the information about the Grove and the fact we may lose it (land owners dispute); the revelation (to us newer members at least) that the Grove of the Corieltauvi had, once upon a time, it’s own duel of the Oak and Holly King, something that potentially may be revived- watch this space!
NB:- If you remember us Wassailing earlier this year back in Imbolc, you’ll be delighted to know that Tatterhood’s apple trees are very prosperous indeed, she had brought one such apple as her offering!
