Alban Elfed 2013

Ah, equinox season, the celebration of autumn and all of its glory.  Of course, the real equinox was on Sunday night, which was a glorious day and evening.  Guaranteed it would be cloudy on our ceremony last night.  Or as Cthulhudruid put it: “I don’t know, you’ve got no stars in Nottingham…” last night, he wasn’t kidding!

When LadyMorgana came to my door, we practically collapsed on to each other: I was full of a head cold with a headache and she was all stressed out (long story, bless her).
Either way we plucked up the stamina to proceed and join the others at Casa le River.  After removing the washing line and “negotiating space” with the solar powered lights, the River’s garden became our Grove space.

It was LadyMorgana’s ceremony really, I just helped a little bit and we bounced ideas back and forth until a ceremony marking the equinox was created.
Me and Lady Morgana are partners in crime and regard ourselves as OBOD siblings as she introduced me into joining OBOD and asked if we should go to the Grove of the Corieltauvi Alban Elfed ceremony at the Grove Heart back in 2010… or should we wait and go to the house meeting later that October (where me and Tatterhood got totally, royally wasted- I even passed out on the journey back).  Me? I was up for diving into the deep end! So we went along and the GOC never got rid of us since.

So it was appropriate we joined up and performed the ceremony centered around the themes of balance of light and darkness:  LadyMorgana MC’d the proceedings and I told the story of Chulhuch and Olwen, which is the tale where we encounter Mabon ap Modron, whom many Modern Pagans have named the autumnal equinox after.
This led into the light that we have harvested this year.  If Mabon honed his skills in a cell since childhood, then what, this year was our light? What were we thankful for that has kept us going, this year?
And in the opposition of light, as the Equinox heralds the coming of longer nights and shorter days, what is the darkness we will face within ourselves?  What shadowy part of ourselves will we spend all of the dark seasons bringing into the light and making better?
LadyMorgana then brought up the need for saying a prayer of healing for Cymro ap Arthan and his Wife.  Cthulhudruid led the healing part of our ceremony, so hopefully they will receive the benefits of that.

Once everything was brought to an end with a group hug, we went indoors to enjoy a feast of bread, cheese, homemade scones and Apple-like nectarines.  Subjects covered included:

Me apologizing to River for breaking her (I brought her whiplash pains back after dry-humping her against the kitchen side what can I say? I get excited!).

Danceswithweasels brought up the subject of ghost walks and how effective they can be for some good storytelling.

LadyMorgana of how not to hold a ghost vigil: I.e. don’t go into a haunted place with an aggressive spirit that the medium pissed off in a past event. And don’t go into a haunted place treating the spirits like shit and giving no respect.  She didn’t want to name the medium in question.

River and Professor X discussed ukuleles.

Professor X and Strider began the discussion on vegetarianism and how Professor X subscribed to the school of “I eat meat, but don’t eat anything with a name”.  Whereas Strider keeps chickens and eats the Roosters. But it is sometimes difficult to kill a creature your children named.
Vegetarians? Not a problem.  I respect those who do it, but I don’t like being preached at.

Me and Cthulhudruid talked about nipple piercings.  Our conclusion? They bloody hurt!

We also discussed ‘The way of the Dude’ and the Church of the flying Spaghetti monster!

As our dear Herald, Tatterhood, put it:

“Everyone was in fine form and wonderful uplifting spirits, a lot of banter thrown in with intellectual debate and plenty of laughter really sums up the energy of the grove last night”

Couldn’t agree more!

This Equinox was my first Gathering with my local Grove, it was a lot of fun 🙂 We performed our ritual, focusing on harvesting the positive of the previous year and preparing for the trials of the coming one, and then we sat around and talked and ate. It was a lot of fun, I enjoyed the sense of family that was going on between everyone. I was a bit more of an observer on this, being new, but everyone was still very nice to me.

Each. Thank you so much for sharing your equinox experience. If there’s a good sense of family, then you know you have a good group.
As you grow with your group, you’ll be swimming in the deep end in no time.

Have fun and thanks, again, for sharing. Locksley. 😉
