Ceremony took place on Sunday 1st Nov.
The day time was fine: blue skies, golden sunshine, autumnal oranges and fiery reds everywhere. First thing in the morning and as soon as evening descended, the Otherworld made itself known by patches of fog across the East Midlands. I don’t know how far they stretched to.
What I do know is that the Grove was free from the fog, the stars above were many and bright.
There was enough of us to get started and by the time the quarters were called, the circle of the initiated was complete.
That’s when the radishes were prep-SEEKRIT STUFF, NO MORE CAN BE SED!-
Once everyone was accepted into the circle, and there was a lot of us! Greenwinterking led the ceremony. He spoke of our ancestors and that from them, whomever they were, we owe everything. He invited anyone to speak on behalf of the ancestors and to share thoughts of what Samhain and the season meant for them. Those who wanted to share, did so.
Greenwinterking paid respects to the Cailleach, with great car, for she is Winter and death. In her honour, a bag was passed around and the recipients who took a stone from it found either a white stone (blessing from the Cailleach) or a black stone (something you wish the Cailleach to take away from you). Those who had black stones cast these out of the circle and thanks was given to Her.
Another bag was passed around and each received the same gift: a hazelnut. With it an invitation to do what we will with it: eat, plant or keep it on an altar.
As with every Samhain, the offices of the Grove were passed on: I remain Herald (The bar had been set by Cthulhudruid and his 5 years), Greenfingers received both the Sword and the Box. The last of which caused a dance for Luch Dorca, who has guarded the box ‘forever’. Well done Greenfingers!
It’s been a very busy year for the Grove and we have many things to accomplish, with the Cailleach’s blessing we will be able to discern what is worth pursuing.
